April is National Autism Awareness Month. Autism Speaks addresses the question, “Why are young people with autism at high risk for mental health crisis?” Physicians agree that young people with autism have a high rate of psychiatric disorders and behavioral challenges are common. Current research indicates that 70% of kids with ASD have at least one mental health disorder and 41% to 50% of kids have two or more mental health conditions. Although work and research is being done in this area, the current resources do not meet the need for services for our autistic community.
